Omega: Unparalleled Precision Technology From the Moon and Back

OMEGA has become synonymous with excellence, innovation, and precision. Astronauts from the Apollo missions came to appreciate its unparalleled precision technology during their trips to the Moon.

Marrying precision and design, Omega continues to embody its original pioneering spirit, creating technical and watchmaking history.

Innovative watchmaking is the foundation of the brand’s legacy. It is inspired by space conquests and sports timing. Best of all, Omega is committed to using and perfecting the watchmaking industry’s most essential materials.

Innovations like the co-axial escapement and Master Chronometer certification have cemented the brand’s outstanding reputation.

The co-axial escapement lowers friction within the movement, offering unparalleled protection against impact. The Master Chronometer certification, on the other hand, guarantees precision and accuracy. This certification also guarantees shock and magnetic field resistance.

With a long, rich history, some of the brand’s trademarks include the Apollo moon landings, the Olympic Games, James Bond, and the countless Allied Armed Forces in WWII. One of their world-famous watch models is the iconic Omega Speedmaster known for its high precision, sturdiness, and ease of use.

History of Omega Watches

Founded in 1848 in Switzerland by Louis Brandt, OMEGA is renowned for its precision technology and reliable timekeeping. When he passed away in 1879, his sons took over and carried on their father’s vision. The watch company is currently part of the Swatch Group – the world’s leading watch manufacturer.

In 1885, the brothers released the Labrador – the first mass-produced caliber. In 1892, they developed their first minute-repeating timepiece. And in 1894, the Omega caliber was introduced in their pocket watches and has since become a standard for quality.

In 1905, the company became the official timekeeper in many sporting events in Switzerland. From there, Omega earned the title of being the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California in 1932.

To celebrate Omega’s 100th anniversary, the company launched the first edition of what will become one of their most iconic watch models – the Omega Seamaster.

Omega made history again in 1962 when astronaut Wally Schirra wore a Speedmaster on his Mercury Sigma 7 Mission. This was the first Omega watch to enter space. Three years later, the Omega Speedmaster became the official chronograph for American space missions.

In 1969, the Omega Speedmaster became the first watch to reach the moon.

During the 1990s, Omega’s popularity became even more widespread as it became the official watch of James Bond after Pierce Brosnan was seen wearing the Omega Seamaster.

Omega watches make a statement, combining form and function. Whether it’s various sporting disciplines, space, or pop culture, OMEGA has earned its reputation as one of the world’s leading watch manufacturers.

What Are the Best Omega Watch Models?

Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch: This is one of the brand’s flagship models. It was first introduced in 1957 with motorsport in mind. However, it all changed when it became the official watch worn by astronauts in 1960. This model is made of stainless steel with a black dial, hesalite crystal lens, and a black bezel with a tachymetric scale.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M: The Diver 300M collection features three-hand watches and chronographs. It is also the longest-running collection of Omega. This collection gained worldwide popularity when it was seen on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. The Seamaster Diver 300M James Bond 007 Edition features a warm brown dial and bezel made of aluminum and it is powered by Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 8806.

Omega Constellation Globemaster: First introduced in 1952, this collection marks the 100th anniversary of OMEGA. This collection is recognized by its “Griffes” or claws as 3 and 9 o’clock and the start symbol at 6 o’clock.

Are Pre-Owned Omega Watches a Good Investment?

Yes, pre-owned Omega watches are considered a solid investment, especially for collectors who value iconic design and mechanical excellence. While not all models appreciate significantly, many hold their value well — and certain references even increase over time.

For example, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (ref. 310.20.42.50.01.001) is currently listed at S$17,500, showcasing strong secondary market demand for the brand’s flagship chronograph. Likewise, the Omega Seamaster Black (ref. 215.92.46.51.01.003) is priced at S$12,500, demonstrating impressive value retention.

Models from the Speedmaster and Seamaster collections — particularly limited editions or those tied to cultural icons like James Bond — continue to perform well on the pre-owned market, offering both emotional and financial returns for discerning buyers.
